After Naval Flying training David joined 845 operating off Bulwark and Albion plus first deployment of Wessex V to North Norway.He then completed an exchange with the USMC operating CH 46 out of New River in North Carolina and Camp Pendleton California.

He returned to 846 briefly before becoming G3 Air in Cdo Forces before changing from FAA to Army avaition and being appointed to Montfortabeek Flt based in Arbroath.

David then became Senior Pilot of 3 BAS. He left the Squadron to attend Staff College. After the Falklands War he attended the first RM Lynx course and rejoined 3 Bas on the day it moved from Coypool to RNAS Yeovilton and took delivery of 6 Lynx. He ceased active flying after command of 3BAS.
